Moving to Greece to work at Baseblue was a leap of faith, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. From the very beginning, I was welcomed not just as a new employee but as part of a family. The culture here is unlike any typical office environment—people genuinely care, and the support I received made the transition seamless. The team went above and beyond to help me settle in, and it felt like home from day one.

What motivated me to make this move was my fascination with the shipping industry. Greece, being a global hub for shipping and home to pioneers in this field, seemed like the ideal place to learn and grow. I’ve always been intrigued by ships and the flow of global trade, and I knew this was my chance to immerse myself in an industry that fuels the world. Looking back now, I’m confident that joining Baseblue was the right decision to start this incredible journey.

From Trainee to Key Account Manager: My Growth at Baseblue

My story at Baseblue began in 2021 when I joined as a Trainee Trader for three months. Those early days were all about learning the ropes of the bunker industry—understanding its nuances and how vital it is in keeping global trade moving. It didn’t take long for me to realize this was the career I wanted to pursue. Soon after, I was given the opportunity to become a Trader and dive into the fast-paced trading floor.

In those early days, my focus was clear: tap into growing markets, build connections with companies that were on a similar growth trajectory, and establish myself as a reliable partner. It was challenging but deeply rewarding. By the end of 2021, I had started building a solid portfolio of clients, setting the stage for what was to come.

The year 2022 brought its own set of challenges. Geopolitical tensions and skyrocketing fuel prices made the market complex and unpredictable. It was a steep learning curve, but those challenges taught me more than I ever imagined. From ensuring compliance to managing cash flow for clients, every deal became a test of strategy and adaptability. By providing tailored solutions, I not only strengthened my relationships with clients but also deepened my understanding of the industry.

Fast forward to 2023, my confidence and experience grew. I began focusing on larger players in the market and worked hard to establish strategic partnerships with them. This shift paid off, and in 2024, I was promoted to Key Account Manager. Now, I focus on nurturing key relationships and ensuring Baseblue remains a strategic partner for our clients rather than just a service provider. With the industry constantly evolving—especially in areas like sustainable fuels and regulations—this approach feels more important than ever.

A Day in My Life at Baseblue

A typical day at Baseblue starts with catching up on the latest oil and shipping news. This helps me stay ahead of market trends and spot potential opportunities for my clients. Mornings are spent following up on trades from the day before and responding to emails. Then comes the most dynamic part of my day: the trading hours.

Later in the day, I focus on building and maintaining client relationships. Whether exploring potential new clients or strengthening ties with existing ones, this part of my job is just as rewarding. I wrap up the day during US trading hours, ensuring all deals are in place before calling it a night.

Every day is dynamic, fast-paced, and full of challenges, but that makes it exciting. No two days are ever the same, and that keeps me on my toes.

Memorable Moments and Achievements

Over the years, I’ve had many moments that stand out. I still remember the thrill of convincing clients to trust me with multi-million-dollar bunker deals over the phone when I was just 22. It was nerve-wracking but incredibly rewarding. There have been times when I’ve sourced bunkers in ports where it seemed nearly impossible or helped a colleague track down vessel owners just in time to prevent major issues.

One of the most fulfilling parts of my job has been supporting fledgling companies by helping them secure credit lines and watching them grow. On the flip side, I’ve also had to make tough calls, like cutting ties with companies on the brink of bankruptcy to protect Baseblue from losses. Every experience, big or small, has taught me something valuable and shaped my journey.

Facing Challenges Head-On

One of the toughest challenges I faced was building a portfolio from scratch, often while working across time zones. It wasn’t easy, but I took it on with determination. I worked hard, stayed patient, and eventually built a portfolio that not only thrived but became a significant contributor to the company’s success.

In this industry, there’s always pressure to outperform your previous results. For me, the key has been shifting my mindset. Instead of obsessing over monthly targets, I view my portfolio as a long-term project. Every trade is an opportunity to learn and grow. This perspective has helped me confidently approach challenges and maintain a sense of balance.
