In response to climate change, the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package expands the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to include large ships. Commencing January 1, 2024, the maritime sector faces a swift two-year phase-in period, necessitating operators to surrender EUAs. Baseblue offers crucial support in understanding and adapting to these changes.

Key Points

Scope and Compliance: Initially applicable to vessels above 5000 gross tonnages, the EU ETS will gradually encompass offshore vessels. The “polluter pays” principle ensures commercial operators reimburse ship owners for allowances.

Emission Surrender and Monitoring: A phased approach requires companies to surrender allowances gradually, reaching 100% after three years. Monitoring, guided by the EU MRV, will include additional greenhouse gases from 2026.

Decarbonization Strategies: With no free allowances, ship operators must purchase EUAs or adopt emission reduction strategies. Baseblue recommends evaluating low-carbon fuels, investing in biofuels and EUAs, and assessing green investments.
